The Impact of Virtual Coaching on Service Member Resilience, Mission Readiness and Retention

The United States military has a crucial mission: to defend the security of our country and its interests – any time, anywhere. These days, deploying, fighting, and winning looks different. No longer confined by time and place, the battles to be won are asynchronous, invisible, and unpredictable. This evolution means a new type of mission-readiness. It means vigilance – and it also means mental strength. It requires hundreds of thousands of service members around the world to show up for duty prepared for the unexpected. It requires innovative, enabled thinkers at every rank, equipped with agile minds and the capacity to look around the corner. Then, to make confident decisions and communicate with speed and efficiency. To achieve this level of peak performance, the United States military has begun to partner with BetterUp to provide Officers and Enlisted personnel with whole person coaching, emphasizing the individual skills and leadership behaviors that drive resilience, mission readiness, and retention. In this presentation, Dr. Mike Litano of BetterUp’s People Insights team will share insights from BetterUp’s partnership with the U.S. military, including the impact of professional coaching on service member resilience, mission readiness, and commitment to their military careers. In addition, he will present novel research on the key behavioral drivers of individual mission readiness and identify practical actions that leaders can take to better prepare their units for their wartime jobs.
